Ghostbusting vicar
Preb. Christopher Tookey Ghostbusting vicar
Prebendary Christopher Tookey has been working as the paranormal advisor for the Bath and Wells diocese for 17 years.

His job does not just involve giving advice on ghostly matters. He can also be brought in to deal with people affected by the occult, as well as to haunted houses where paranormal activity has been reported.

In the case of haunted houses, Mr Tookey tries to find some objective evidence such as historical information about previous tenants.

He also collects witness information from people who have witnessed the same phenomena independently and without collaboration.

Where appropriate, Mr Tookey has performed services of healing in some houses which sends a deceased person back to where they should be. He has also held requiem masses in houses where the influence of a dead person can still be felt, as a service that is meant to rest the soul.

He takes his job very seriously as it fits in with his theology, he has no problem with believing that people who die are still in existence.

Mr Tookey said: "Anyone can walk into a house and feel if it is a happy home or an uneasy one. I do not think people just imagine these situations, but you need to find some sort of objective evidence. My job is not about exorcism. I perform a service of healing that sends a diseased person to where they ought to be.

"I have dealt with cases of people seeing a ghost in their home, then later identifying them from a picture and finding out they were a former resident.

"A typical case I would be called in to deal with is if someone sees, hears or smells something or feels the atmosphere of someone diseased. Something may have happened to trigger it or they may have just moved into the house.

"First of all I would look for a clue in the history of the house, for instance, had there been a suicide, cruelty or unhappiness there?

"Once I have built up a picture I decide whether the situation needs to be dealt with in a different way than counselling. I If someone has died and still influences the place I would hold a requiem mass, which is a service to repose the soul"
